Theme Compatibility

MOD Bundles works with Online Store 2.0 themes. This guide explains compatibility requirements and how to check if your theme is supported.

Requirements

Online Store 2.0 Theme

MOD Bundles requires a theme that supports app blocks. This feature was introduced with Online Store 2.0 in 2021.

How to know if your theme is OS 2.0:

  • Theme was published after June 2021

  • Theme supports app blocks in the customizer

  • Theme uses JSON templates (technical detail)

Checkout Extensibility

Bundle discounts require Shopify's checkout extensibility:

  • Available on Shopify Basic plan and higher

  • Not available on Starter or Lite plans

Checking Your Theme

Method 1: Try Adding an App Block

  1. Go to Online Store → Themes → Edit theme

  2. Navigate to a Product template

  3. Click Add block in the product section

  4. Look for an Apps section at the bottom

If you see "Apps": Your theme is compatible. If you don't see "Apps": Your theme may not support app blocks.

Method 2: Check Theme Store Listing

  1. Go to your theme in the Shopify Theme Store

  2. Look at the feature list

  3. "App blocks" or "Online Store 2.0" indicates compatibility

Method 3: Check Theme Documentation

Your theme's documentation should mention:

  • "Online Store 2.0"

  • "App block support"

  • "Sections everywhere"

  • Crave

  • Taste

  • Boundless

  • Simple

  • Narrative

If you're using one of these: Consider upgrading to a newer theme for the best MOD Bundles experience.

What If My Theme Isn't Compatible?

Option 1: Upgrade Your Theme (Recommended)

The best solution is upgrading to an Online Store 2.0 theme.

Benefits of upgrading:

  • App block support for MOD Bundles and other apps

  • Better performance

  • More customization options

  • Ongoing Shopify support

Free upgrade path: Shopify's Dawn theme is free and fully compatible.

Option 2: Manual Integration

For themes without app block support, MOD Bundles can potentially be integrated manually via code.

This requires:

  • Adding Liquid code to your theme files

  • Technical knowledge or a developer

  • More maintenance when updating your theme

Contact us if you need help with manual integration.

Option 3: Switch to a Compatible Theme

If upgrading isn't an option, consider switching to a different theme that supports OS 2.0.

Things to consider:

  • Migration time

  • Design differences

  • SEO impact (minimal with proper redirects)

Theme Customizations

If your theme has heavy customizations, they shouldn't affect MOD Bundles compatibility—as long as the base theme supports app blocks.

However, customizations can cause issues if they:

  • Override cart functionality

  • Remove app block containers

  • Conflict with bundle JavaScript

Testing after customizations:

  1. Create a test bundle

  2. Add the app block

  3. Test the full purchase flow

  4. Check cart and checkout

Theme Updates

When your theme updates:

Good news: Your MOD Bundles app blocks should remain intact.

Potential issues:

  • Theme update changes how app blocks are displayed

  • Update introduces conflicts with bundle scripts

After updating your theme:

  1. Test your bundles on the storefront

  2. Verify cart and checkout work

  3. Check for any visual issues

Multiple Themes

If you have multiple themes (e.g., development and live):

  • App blocks are configured per theme

  • Each theme needs its own app block setup

  • MOD Bundles works across all compatible themes simultaneously

When switching themes:

  1. Customize the new theme

  2. Add app blocks

  3. Set up templates

  4. Test before publishing

Theme-Specific Issues

Dawn

Dawn works great with MOD Bundles. No known issues.

Impulse

Works well. If using Impulse's cart drawer, bundles integrate smoothly.

Prestige

Compatible. May need to adjust block positioning depending on your layout.

Custom/Bespoke Themes

Custom themes built on OS 2.0 architecture should work. Test thoroughly:

  • App block appearance

  • Cart functionality

  • Checkout process

Troubleshooting

"Can't find Apps section"

  • Theme may not be OS 2.0

  • Try looking in different sections (main product area)

  • Check if theme has a different app block location

App block shows but looks wrong

  • Check block positioning

  • Review theme-specific CSS

  • Test in incognito mode

Bundle works in customizer but not live

  • Make sure you saved the theme

  • Verify the product uses the correct template

  • Clear browser cache and test again
